Cost Reduction Strategies for the Manufacturing Environment  

 

Introduction

This 2 day seminar on "Cost Reduction Strategies" course is designed to increase awareness of various concepts and approaches that may be adopted to reduce manufacturing cost. The key concepts covered shall include lean thinking in manufacturing as well as strategies for cost reduction in a manufacturing environment.

It is a very practical, hands-on training program that has been designed with emphasis on interaction, participation and adult based learning.

The training session may be extended to on site coaching by experts in cost reduction strategies so that the applicability of the concepts taught may be extended to real life project based situations being faced.
This will provide participants with an added advantage of external specialized support in undertaking cost reduction projects under the guidance of experts in this field. 

Course Objectives

By the time the participants have completed this two day workshop, they will develop the necessary understanding, skills and attitudes to reduce cost through a well structured and systematic approach After completing the program the participants would be in a position to make immediate, effective and sustainable actions that can have a direct reduction in cost.

To be able to achieve the terminal objective specified above, the participants, at the end of the training program should be in a position to:
* Recognize how cost reduction in a manufacturing environment may be undertaken in a structured and systematic manner.
* List key manufacturing cost reduction strategies
* Distinguish between Cost and Expenditure in a manufacturing based environment
* Recognize the importance of cost reduction by design
* Identify techniques relating to elimination of overhead cost
* Undertake activities associated with standardization and product line rationalization.
* Implement cost reduction strategies discussed.
 

Course Outline

Presentation / Discussions
Participants shall be encouraged to share and discuss the following:
* Activities being undertaken to reduce cost
* Difficulties associated with implementing
* cost reduction initiatives

Skill Building Exercise
Participants will be required to participate in identifying areas for reducing cost based on pictures and videos that will be shown.

Individual Exercises
All participants will be required to undertake a pre and post test before and after the session as a means of evaluating their understanding level on cost reduction strategies

Video clips
A number of video clips on the concept of reducing cost will be shown

Evaluations
The first level evaluation shall be carried out through a trainee feedback form
The second level evaluation will be carried out through the following:
* Pre and post test
* Completion of workbook
* Group based discussions  

Trainer(s)

Dr Kumar, Rumesh

Dr Rumesh Kumar is a performance improvement consultant and management trainer specializing in the areas of leadership development, continual productivity improvement and enhancement of interpersonal skills.

He is a Mechanical Engineer and a Certified Training Professional and has more than 20 years of working experience. He has conducted training programs for many well known and reputable organizations both in Malaysia as well as abroad.

Dr Rumesh has been involved in a number of cost reduction as well as productivity improvement based consulting projects both in Malaysia as well as abroad. He was involved in a major productivity improvement project carried out by Mahindra and Mahindra, a world renowned heavy equipment manufacturer as well as in Siyaram Textiles, a well known textile manufacturer, in India.

In Malaysia, Dr Rumesh has conducted seminars on cost reduction for well over 100 professionals and managers from numerous organizations based in Malaysia.

Dr Rumesh obtained his Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of South Australia and his Masters in Business Administration from the Heriot Watt University, United Kingdom. He received his Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University Malaya.
